Level 1 Information:

USATF Coaching Education Level 1 program is a starting point for all track and field coaches. One of the objectives is to put all

coaches on common platform (i.e., speaking the same language). The Level 1 program covers all events in a foundational manner by

emphasizing fundamentals, rules, safety/risk management, and instruction techniques. Level 1 prepares individuals to coach junior

high school, high school, club, and age group athletes.

• Level 1 Schools are two-and-a-half-day courses (21-24 hours), including both classroom instruction and hands-on training.

Attendance at all sessions is required.

• After the school, participants must complete an online exam that covers event-related and sport science subjects.

• Upon attending the School and passing the exam, participants will be issued a Level 1 Certificate of Completion.

Instructors:

Randy Adair

Highland Park HS (TX)

Coach Adair has 30 years of coaching experience in Texas, winning

State Championships in Track & Field and Cross Country. Adair

has coached numerous state champion athletes in the sprints and

jumps as well as the record setting, all-time girls 4 x 400 relay in

Texas high school history. Recently Adair coached the national

high school leader in the boys triple jump at 51' and is currently

coaching one of the top female pole vaulters in the state of Texas

at Highland Park High School in Dallas. Adair has also coached

football and track & field at Mesquite High School in Mesquite, TX

and also has coaching experience at national track and field

powerhouse Dallas Skyline High School. Adair has USATF Level II

certification in the endurance, jumps, and multi-events, and since

1999, has served as an assistant summer coach under Coach Dick

Booth and Coach Danny Green of the University of Arkansas for

the prestigious Summer Track and Field Camps in Fayetteville,

Arkansas. Coach Adair has international track and field experience

as a coach for International Sport Tours of Wichita, KS. He has

assisted as jumps and hurdles coach for several track and field

tours to Western and Central Europe. As an athlete, Adair was a

very successful pole vaulter at the University of Louisiana where he

obtained an M.Ed degree. Coach Adair resides in Rockwall, TX with

his lovely wife, Donna and Red, the dog. www.hpisd.org

John Bauman

Oklahoma State Univ.

Coach Bauman enters his second season at Oklahoma State

University after serving six years as an assistant coach at the

University of Illinois. At Oklahoma State, Coach Bauman coaches

the throws and helps with the sprints, jumps, and weight program.

An accomplished coach, Bauman has coached 29 All-Americans, 34

NCAA national qualifiers, and 19 individual conference champions.

As an athlete, Coach Bauman earned NAIA All-American honors 10

times while competing for NAIA powerhouse Doane College.

Baumann and his wife, Lisa, have three daughters, Catabrean,

Holly and Sadie, and one son, Max.

Ryan Turner

Cowley County Community College (KS)

Coach Turner enters his third year as assistant cross country and

track coach at Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kansas. Turner

coaches the cross country teams and the distance and middistance

runners during the track season. In 2006, Turner guided

both the women’s & men’s cross country teams to top 4th & 5th

placed finishes at the NJCAA National Cross Country

Championships. Since arriving at Cowley, Turner has coached 11

junior college All-Americans, one national champion, six regional

champions, 12 conference champions, and 39 national meet

qualifiers. At the 2007 NJCAA National Indoor Track

Championships, Turner was named NJCAA National Women’s

Indoor Track & Field Assistant Coach of the Year. Turner is USATF

Level II certified in the Endurance and Sprint/Hurdles/Relays

events. As an athlete, Turner was a distance/mid-distance runner

at Southwestern College in Winfield, KS where he obtained his B.S.

& M.Ed degree. Ryan and his wife, Cassie, have a one year old

daughter, Lauryn.
